The
Hickory Challenge
The 'Hickory Callenge' took place during the 2004 Dunhill
Links Championship and was held over the Old Course
on a gorgeous, early autumnal evening with Vijay Singh,
who had then recently replaced Tiger Woods as the world
No.1, and the great South African golfer, then the world's
No.3, Ernie Els.
Our Old Course St. Andrews Caddie, John Boyne, was
chosen to caddy for Vijay Singh as these great modern
day players prepared to golf on the historic Old Course
with hickory shafted golf clubs, originating from the
1920s. The Caddies were dressed in period costume and
the golfers wore their natural garb.

After 4 putts
on the first green with a classic hickory shafted putter
Vijay decides to chip in for a birdie at the second,
dispensing with any need to putt!

Ernie Els teeing off the 17th Road Hole
watched carefully by his caddie David Coyne, John &
Vijay.

Vijay and John confirm that the 17th
Road Hole green is still where it has always been!

Having found the 17th green, avoiding
Road Hole Bunker, John anxiously watches Vijay take
a few putts before getting the ball below ground!
